November 7, 2017, Day 12

If there is something like a camino day, I had mine (so far) today.
I was really afraid of this mountain section. Already on the day when I bought my guide book, I saw the description of this section, and I thought it will be soooo hard!
But today i woke up, had the lovely breakfast our host prepared, and felt like I could move the mountain, not just walk across. Even though it was really cold in the morning - one of the ponds was even frozen.

But I had two trousers on + a cap, gloves, and so on.
Just after our village someone greeted me: a nice older (and very loudly snoring) Mexican guy whom I thought we would never see again, as he and his group left us in Leon stating that they won't make a day off. And now he was walking with me and we were chatting.

I was walking faster today than Marti, so I just joined this Mexican group of people for quite some time. The sun was shining, we had a nice chat, and the kilometers passed by.

Arriving to Rabanal del Camino (in the middle-age the last village before crossing the mountain) I wanted to buy some medication (unfortunately I caught a cold and have a blocked nose and a sore throat) but the pharmacy was closed.

However a restaurant had open - and this time a real restaurant with a menu: I had a lovely pot of vegetable soup.

Missing real food for so long makes you appreciate good food even more. I had a tea and a coffee and some cookies as well, so I was well prepared for the last section of the road - the already mentioned last one hour. But this time this one hour just flew away. The route was a path a bit beside the road - a bit steep but not too much, a bit stoney but not too much. It even started to rain a little bit, then I was not so relaxed, as a strong wind was also coming up and the clouds were really grey and unfriendly. But apart from a few drops only a full rainbow happened:

Oh, and I also met a bambi on the way!
As I got here quite on time I could take a rest before dinner. Oh, and dinner was a vegetarian paella :)

After dinner most of the people stayed on for a nice chat - you could somehow feel the apprehension of the coming day. The Cruz de ferro and crossing the mountain are the traditional highlights of the Camino.
It was interesting to listen to people why they are doing the Camino, and just talking and having fun - genertally we are not here to suffer but to meet people, and being a peregrino means that everyone on the road with a backpack is a friend in a way, you can just greet them and walk on, or have a chat - people on the road seem to be somehow opener and kinder than general.
But now let's go to bed, tomorrow morning I want to be at the Cruz de ferro by sunrise.
